Your child’s pre-school curriculum should include time spent on science, but there are plenty of opportunities to explore science just outside your door. With so much focus on the importance of science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM) education for children it’s never too early to expose your child to how fun science can be.

The Space Coast Science Museums

The Space Coast, as Brevard County, FL is nicknamed, is the home of John F. Kennedy Space Center. Exhibits about the race to the moon and pioneers of space are featured. The Space Center also offers tours of its extensive grounds.

Brevard County is also home to the American Space Museum in Titusville, FL. The museum features regularly scheduled STEAM Saturday programs throughout the year. For example, a recent program taught young students about the solar system and an upcoming program allows students to design their own space suits through engineering.

Eastern Florida University in Central Brevard County has a Planetarium that is open to the public. There are plenty of hands on exhibits as well as star shows at scheduled times.

Outdoor Exploration

There is plentiful wildlife and sea life living on the Brevard County coast. The Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, The Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge, Brevard County Barrier Island Center are all open for public exploration certain times of the year. Migrating birds and other wildlife can be viewed.

The Brevard County Barrier Island Center offers programs, such as their Eco Club for children. Children can learn about such aquatic creatures as sea turtles and take part in events, like turtle digs, that help foster their awareness of the need to take care of the environment.

The Bayside Discovery Center in Palm Bay offers the perfect nurturing environment for budding young learners. This foundation will help foster your child’s curiosity and work to build their continued interest in STEAM activities and learning throughout the Brevard County area.
